FLORENCE ITINERARIES Museum of the Opera del Duomo (Cathedral Museum) In the niche above the entrance is a bust of Cosimo I, work of Bandini (1572). Access to the Museum is Through the atrium. Opposite the entrance, in the small corridor, one find fragments of sculptures, and some panels of the old baptismal font where Dante was baptised, and which at one time was in the Baptistery. In the large rectangular room are works by Arnolfo di Cambio, architect and sculptor, including, on the left, the statue of Pope Boniface VIII with his arm raised in blessing, and on the opposite wall, statues that were on the old facade of the Cathedral. Against the right wall, among other statues is Donatello's St. John the Evangelist, that is supposed to have inspired Michelangelo with his Moses. On the wall, observe the design for the old facade of the Cathedral, dismantled in the XVI cent. From the left hand side of the statue of Boniface VIII one passes to three small rooms dedicated to the funeral mask of Brunelleschi and the models of the Dome; various ancient machines used in the work on the Cathedral are also found here. The room with the ancient facade opens into that dedicated to models of the Cathedral facades over the centuries, with precious missals and a large lectern, and from here to the small chapel containing rare reliquaries and holy vestments. A short staircase leads to the landing with the famous Pietà by Michelangelo (1550) which was intended to be placed on his tomb. This is an unfinished work of intense dramatic feeling. Joseph of Arimathea, supporting Christ, is believed to be a selfportrait of Michelangelo. Perhaps because he was not satisfied with it, the artist broke up the group which was put together again by his pupil Calcagni, who finished the figure of Magdalen. First Floor
